Programs and Projects

District Playground coordinates and participates in public art exhibitions and festivals, hosts educational workshops, and develops community outreach events in order to demonstrate the importance of creativity and how it is a vital component of our social fiber. Some of our early projects are described below.

Community Art Exhibitions at Tonic, Mt. Pleasant

Details for the upcoming exhibit at Tonic in Mount Pleasant are here. If you are interested in submitting a piece or know someone who may be interested, please take a look.

Columbia Heights Day Festival: Saturday, October 4th

Come play with us! District Playground will be engaging the public in a variety of creative projects throughout the day. From bi-lingual group poetry and mural work, to the unveiling of our Red Box Project, we will be encouraging passers-by to find their inner artist. And perhaps smile just a bit wider.

If you'd like to volunteer, please let us know! The more people we have to help, the more interaction we can have with passers-by, and the more fun we can have.  Every little bit counts, and the energy you’d bring is what we count on.

For information on the Festival, click here. If you'd like to volunteer, please email us!

Amateur Photography Contest

On April 12th, District Playground held our first Amateur Photo Contest in Washington, DC. With only 6 1/2 hours to shoot, edit, and submit their photos, our 11 participants demonstrated that they've got great skill.

See the photos!

The Topic: Our entire existence is composed of four elements: Earth, Water, Air, and Fire.  Each element is a symbol of immense power, oftentimes striking a delicate balance between extreme beauty, life-giving force, and total destruction.  We invite you today to approach this challenge with the goal of incorporating one or more of these Four Elements in each of your images.  We challenge you to reflect your world – the way you want it to be.

Special thanks to 88DC, X, Brendan Mattingly, Rob Carlson, Mark Borden, and Phil Cowperthwaite for all their help with this event! Thanks also to Jeremy Parker for designing the flyer.

Artomatic 2008 was a blast! Over 800 artists displayed some incredible work, and performers added to the fun by sharing all kinds of music and dance and fashion and fire. It was all truly inspiring!

District Playground built a playhouse to serve as a magical escape from the crowds. A place where the imaginations of the young and old could be given a chance to run free. Take a look at some photos!
