Around Town

The Creative Community in and around Washington, DC is full of life!  There are sometimes so many things to do on a given night or weekend that it’s hard to pick!  Gallery opening parties, fundraisers, happy hours, performances, workshops, and on and on.  After all, we all only have 24 hours to use on a given day (don’t you wish you had more?).  If you’re like us, you wish you could be everywhere at once.

We here at District Playground want to help you sort through the craziness.  Below you can find our top picks, including links for more information.  If you would like to submit an event for consideration, please email us with a description and we’ll add it to our calendar.

Our Top Picks:

Red Box Project
Volunteers needed!
Tuesday, April 28th. 11am until approximately 3pm, somewhere on a sidewalk in Washington, DC. Check the website for last minute details.

The Red Box Project is a phone-booth sized box made out of metal poles with walls of posterboard covered in red fabric. It stands freely on its own. We will set it up on the sidewalk of one of Washington’s high stress corridors (Chinatown, K St., Farragut West) and encourage participation from passers-by. Participants will be invited to step inside of the box and yell/screem/shout/grind their teeth/etc for approximately 30 seconds. We want to encourage people to drop whatever anger they’re carrying around with them that day and gently push them to laugh at themselves.

Come encourage laughter and release. Bring your friends, and make more!

Through the inspiration and support of many, the vision and concept of ‘X’ was conceived by David Fogel. David is a community leader and curator/co-founder of 88, a Washington DC based creative community and multi-media production company committed to providing conscientious cutting edge products. The intention behind ‘X’ was to create a 21st century Live-art “happening”. A kick-ass, inspired and inspiring event for all that brought artists out of their personal studios and into a multi-media, live-art environment that would in effect a.) shake up the artist’s creative process through the power of a creatively charged environment b.) expose people to various approaches to the creative process and c.) feature forward thinking artistic talent. The essence of the event was symbolized through the equation: LIVE (Electronica + Projections + Art + Fashion + Performance) + YOU = X

In conjunction with the Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District (BID) and Monument Realty, Artomatic will be presenting more than five weeks of art, music, theater, workshops and more — all of it free for visitors. Located between the U.S. Capitol Building and the Anacostia River and between Barracks Row Main Street and South Capitol Street, the Capitol Riverfront is a vibrant new business center, urban neighborhood, entertainment district and waterfront destination.

In addition to displays by hundreds of artists, the event features free films, educational presentations and children’s activities, as well as musical, dance, poetry, theater and other performances.
